Does anyone remember the book “French Women Don’t Get Fat” by Mirielle Guiliano? Well I have some of my own insights from living in Europe for 1 month now. I am not in France, but I am sure there are some similarities. First, in Ireland, gas costs about $10 per gallon, this encourages people to walk more or ride their bikes to get places. Even taking the bus requires more energy to walk to and from the stops. It is also easier to take public transportation here. Second, most of the food in the stores in local and minimally processed. Third, it is hard to find a fast food restaurant here. The closest one to our house is at least 3 miles away. Fourth, everything comes in small packages (unless you shop at Tesco Extra:) so naturally you eat a smaller portion. Fifth, there are no free refills at any restaurant. Lastly, the grocery stores are working hard to prevent obesity here by having things like a “no sweets line” at the checkout, which is always shorter. And so, my conclusion so far is that it isn’t just one thing that makes America fat, it is a lot of things.
